Review of CALL

Description:
     This class was very helpful for me to learn how to use internet technology in Engliksh class.
According to various topisc, we've learned how to handle digital story telling material, video editing, socrative, canvas and some listening sites. All of them were very interesting and useful  for English class.

Pros:
     Especially for me , it was an essential class because I am very clumsy to use internet sites and programs, but through this class, I've learned really many things about internet sites and materials.
As I'm getting older(?), I am losing the confidence to handle the computer, but this class gave good opportunities to know and understand about internet teaching materials. Furthermore, as a team activity, I got much help from my partner, Kyungran. I'm very thankful to her.

Cons:
     The weak point is the lack of time for me to achieve the process entirely. It means that I should have exercised the skill or method that I've learned in class at home or later. I neglected that. So I am still wandering between the first stage and the next stage.

Overall view:
     For me, it was a wonderful experience. I made my own blogger for the first time, I realized there are so many interesting materials you can use in the internet and they are waiting for you to use them sometime. The more important thing is that I can have the confidence and am not afraid of new technology. Based on the things I've learned in class, I would try more challenge to the internet.

Review of Audio/Video listening lab sites

Description:
     Audio/ Video listening lab sites based on the internet  are useful tools for improving students' listening skills. With a headset, students take part in the activities provided in the program. They can record their voices and compare them with native speaker's pronunciation, and they also answer some questions to check their comprehension. In all age groups, this method can be used.

Pros:
     Above all, that students can participate in class actively is the strongest point. Until now, the time for listening practice has seemed to be the moment for students to be calm and teachers have not known whether students are studying or not. But in this method, students can enjoy the class because there are so many interesting listening materials in the internet. For example, in real-english.com, students are able to meet a variety of English accents and different tones, and in englishcentral.com, they can experience many interesting topics from ad. to movie trailer and activities. Besides these sites,  there are many useful sites for elementary and pre-school childrens. Most materials include fun activities that students engage in class very actively.

Cons:
     As mentioned above, there are so many listening sites in the internet. So it can take some time for teachers to choose the appropriate sites for the target language structures and goals. Another problem is that when students are doing the activities in the sites, they are likely to focus on just amusement, not the content. In order to prevent this problem, teachers should give time-limit and discuss about some activities with students.

Overall view:
     Unlike before, listening to various pronunciations according to countries or persons is getting important. Only Ameican accent is not considered to be right pronunciation. English, Australian even Indian accent is acceptable to learners these days. Through these internet listening sites, students can inprove their listening ability and be open-minded to those various kinds of foreigners

Review of Digital Storytelling

Description:
     Digital storytelling is  to create a short story by using digital multi-media techniques based on computer web-site. Students can express their story with music, animation, and their voice. It needs a little bit technique for matching sound and animation, and headsets and microphones.

Pros:
     This is very useful tool for students to show their creativity and ideas for making a story. It is also a good method for collaborative works, like one is for creating a story, another is for making animation, the other is for recording voice, etc. In the process of this project, students can improve their skills for dealing with technical devices, and they really feel self-confident and proud of the outcome. As a result, they are able to engage in class much more actively.

Cons:
     Much time and effort should be needed until students are able to produce a good storytelling video. Teachers also should spend mich time for using this tool properly. Another weak point is that you cannot edit the time for back-ground music, so you have to use only one music through the whole story, and this is the flaw of the site, PowToon.

Overall view:
     The best point of digital storytelling is creating something new and novel by yourself. It gives you  chances  to stretch your imagination as far as you can, and improve your thinking skills in the process. Even though it is not easy to use the tool, it is worth trying it.

Review of Daum PotEncoder(video editing programme)

Description:
     Daum PotEncoder is a kind of video editing program served for free. It was developed by Daum Communications in Korea. You can use this progrmme  for converting almost audio and video file formats with using inbuilt codec. Thanks to this fuction, you are able to enjoy your favorite videos in any devices very comfortably. Also, you can use it for making your own videos by cutting and combining some video scenes and putting subtitles and logos.  The film you've made can be uploaded in your cafe or blog.

Pros:
     People may say this programme is available only for listening and speaking class. But in my opinion, it is also very useful for grammar class. Students easily feel bored in grammar class, and they can not concentrate well. Teachers can provide an interesting edited video file which includes the learned grammar, cutting only what you need in some videos and uniting them together like the collection of kissing scenes in the movie, Cinema Paradise. It will make students understand better how the grammar is used in real situations and pay attention to the class more. Another good point is that students by themselves can make their own videos as if they are actors or actresses as a group activity, and present them to the classmates, which gives the students self-confidence.

Cons:
     In fact, it is not easy to learn how to handle this programme successfully. So, you may need much time to make your video until you are accustomed to it. Besides, you may in trouble in the process because it can stop the work abruptly.(This is a weakpoint of all computer-based programmes)

Overall feeling:
     Despite some difficulties above, it has a strong point in the view of  making your creative videos.   Once you learn how to use it, you can use this programme in many ways, such as giving the chance of comparing English and Americn accents, translating experience to the students and recording your lessons and making a long video file.

Review of Canvas (student perspective)

Description
     Canvas is an educational learning management system in web-site which was created in Utah, in 2011. You can access to it through all possible internet devices and also link with other web-sites such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Google. With your teacher's code number, you can enter the site  and check what is going on in the course you take. You are able to know assignments, due dates, your grades and monthly schedule, etc. In other words, Canvas has a role of pen and paper you use in order to memorize some information for your course.

Pros
    The best thing of Canvas is that you can check all the things you need for the class very instantly. It tells you which assignment you've already submitted and which report you are scheduled to hand in by what date, and even what kinds of schedules the teacher has in the month. This makes it very convenient for you to plan your own time schedule and you are getting in urgent of accomplishing your work. Another good point is that you can contact with your teacher and peers, and have discussion about topics, which means Canvas is an interactional web-site, not one way direction.

Cons
     It may happen you can be in trouble in the class if you do not check the site regularly. Like a daily plan book, you'd better enter the site and check it every day to confirm the process of your class.

Overall feeling
     At first time, I was a little surprised at the well-defined assignments and monthly schedules. Teacher states the grades in details and clearly. I think students have no bias about their grades because teachers can open most sources and post the standard of grades very explicitly. So it is very useful to support learning management and inform the news to the students.

Review of Socrative

Description
     Socrative is a sudents' response system used in tablets, lap-top computers, smartphones or other web-enabled technology. It is very easy to use. You can access to it just with your e-mail address and password. It has two faces: for teachers and for students. As a teacher, you make questions, import other's questions and confirm the students' response. For students, they can meet the questions with the teacher's roomnumber and answer them individually.

Pros
     The good point of Socrative is ease to use. Even though you are a beginner at web devices, you can create quizzes and surveys very easily, even adding images. And simply you can check how much students understand the class and get the information about who needs more effort by receiving the results quickly. You are  also able to import others' questions, so it is possible to save and prepare many questions before the class. Another positive thing is that you can make students participate in class actively. They are frantic with using web machines. Their cell phones are not just troublemakers but can be educational devices. And finally, all the students' activity is done individually so that you can know the students' level secretly, in other words, students need not to be shy at the low grade.

Cons
     It may be a disadvantage for you not to enter quizzes with students simultaneouly. It can not make you add something while you and your students work together. Another thing to be worried is that when the web-devices do not work, or need much time to work, the whole class should wait and you may have difficulty in class.

Overall feeling
     Socrative is very effective  to check the students' understanding and get the feedback for making next teaching materials. Very simply and conveniently you can make questions and get the results of surveys. The ease of use of it can make you have confidence and keep in touch with other web-based educational apps.
